Which Travel eSIM Should You Buy?

CheapFly earns a commission if you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. Prices checked October 2026 — check the live price before you buy, eSIM prices change often.

Buy by trip shape, not by brand. One country for a week needs a different plan than four countries in two weeks, and a plan that looks cheapest per gigabyte can still be the wrong buy if it expires before your trip ends. Check three things before you pay: data amount, validity days, and whether every country on your route is in the plan's country list.

Fast Decision Rules
Multi-Country Trip

Four or more countries, one trip → one regional plan (Europe example below). One install, no new plan at each border.

Single City / Country

One country, one city → one local plan. Regional plans cost more for data you will not use.

Heavy Data Usage

Heavy maps + video every day → check the unlimited fair-use limit first. "Unlimited" plans slow down after a daily fast-data allowance on most providers.

Phone Compatibility

Phone check first: your phone must support eSIM and must not be locked to your home network. If either fails, no eSIM on this page will work.

Section 1 — Europe regional plans (the comparison that decides most trips)

Common yardstick: 10GB / 30-day regional

Use the 10GB / 30-day regional plan as the common yardstick across providers:

Yesim Europe & UK

$17.91–$17.92

Cheapest of the four on this yardstick, and the same price as its Italy-only plan.

GigSky Europe

$22.99

43 countries included, with Turkey coverage part of the standard regional bundle.

Airalo EUconnect / Eurolink

$24 / $31

EUconnect ($24) covers EU + UK. Eurolink ($31) covers 42 countries including the western Balkans and Ukraine.

Saily Europe

$35.99

The most expensive regional plan of the four on this yardstick, despite a strong single-country range.

Verdict

On price alone for a multi-country Europe trip, Yesim wins this yardstick. Airalo Eurolink wins on country coverage if your route includes the Balkans or Ukraine. Saily only wins this section if your trip is mostly one country (see Section 2).

🇮🇹

Section 2 — One country: validity days matter as much as price

Italy example using 5GB data plans:

Yesim (Italy 5GB)
$10.75
30 days validity
Airalo (Italy 5GB)
$10.00 / 7 days
$12.00 for 30 days
Saily (Italy 5GB)
$12.99
30 days validity
Verdict

For a two-week Italy trip, the Airalo 7-day plan expires mid-trip even though its sticker price is lowest. On a 30-day basis Yesim is cheapest here. Always compare the price for YOUR trip length, not the shortest validity on offer.

Section 4 — Roaming vs eSIM (the maths that sells the page)

Home-network roaming is charged per day, an eSIM is charged per plan. On a 10-day trip, even a mid-range daily roaming fee beats no plan at all only if you use almost no data — the moment you use maps, messages and photos daily, a fixed-data eSIM is usually cheaper.

If your home provider charges a daily fee for roaming abroad, 10 days of travel can rapidly accumulate high carrier pass costs. A fixed-data travel eSIM gives you a predictable prepaid total with zero bill-shock when you return home.

Verdict

If your home plan charges daily roaming, buy the eSIM before you fly. If your home plan already includes free roaming in your destination, you do not need this page at all.

⚙️

Section 5 — Set it up before you fly (5 steps)

1

Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked

iPhone XS and later, most recent Pixel and Samsung flagships. On Android, dial *#06# — an EID number indicates hardware eSIM support.

2

Buy and install at home, on Wi-Fi

Installing needs an active internet connection. Do not leave the installation step until you land at your destination airport.

3

Label your lines ("Home" and destination)

Labeling prevents confusion so you never accidentally consume data on your domestic SIM line.

4

On landing: switch mobile data to travel eSIM & turn on data roaming

Set Cellular/Mobile Data to the travel eSIM and turn ON data roaming for that line. Travel eSIMs route via partner roaming agreements and will not work without it.

5

Switch OFF data roaming on your home line

Keep the home line active so banking verification SMS and two-factor codes arrive, but with data roaming disabled to block carrier roaming charges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my phone number change?

No — the eSIM is data only on these plans. Your home line stays on for calls and SMS.

When does the validity clock start?

Usually on first connection in the destination, but check the plan's activation rule before you buy — it varies.

Can I top up if I run low?

Yes, in the provider's app, without a new install.

Does an eSIM work as a hotspot?

Check the plan page — hotspot rules vary by provider and plan, and unlimited plans often cap hotspot data.

What if my phone does not support eSIM?

Then buy a physical local SIM at the airport or keep your home roaming — no plan on this page will install.
